Overview

What are Goals?

The Goals feature lets you track specific financial targets (e.g., “Save $50K for a house down payment by 2027”) and monitor progress with analytical probability models. Unlike simple savings trackers, Rikdom calculates success likelihood based on your actual portfolio growth rate (CAGR) and shows whether you're saving fast enough to hit your targets (Goal Velocity Gauge).

Step by Step

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Create Your First Goal

Navigate to Goals and click “Create Goal.”

  • Name: e.g., “House Down Payment,” “Emergency Fund,” “Retirement Corpus”
  • Target Amount: The dollar amount you're saving toward
  • Target Date: When you need to hit this amount
  • Link Accounts: Toggle on the accounts contributing to this goal (e.g., your HYSA for emergency fund, brokerage for retirement)

2. Understand Success Probability

On the Goals page, each goal shows a radial donut gauge with probability of success.

  • Green (≥80%): High confidence—current trajectory puts you on track
  • Copper (50-79%): Moderate confidence—you might need to save more or extend the deadline
  • Red (<50%): Low confidence—significant changes needed (increase savings rate, adjust target, or extend timeline)
  • The calculation uses a lognormal growth model based on your linked accounts' historical CAGR

3. Check Goal Velocity

On the Intelligence landing page, you'll see a Goal Velocity Gauge widget.

  • Required Velocity: $/month you need to save across all goals
  • Actual Velocity: $/month you're currently saving (based on account balance growth)
  • Surplus/Deficit: Difference between actual and required
  • Per-goal impact breakdown shows which goals need the most monthly contribution
  • 90-day sparkline tracks velocity over time—spot trends and adjust behavior

4. Reorder and Prioritize

Drag-and-drop goals to reorder by priority.

  • Top goals appear first on the Goals page and in the velocity breakdown
  • Use this to focus attention on what matters most (e.g., emergency fund before vacation fund)
  • Order is personal—no right answer, just what keeps you motivated

Pro Tips

Pro Tips

  • Link the right accounts: Don't link your entire net worth to every goal. Be specific—link only the accounts you're actively using to fund that goal.
  • Adjust for volatility: If a goal's success probability is green but the linked account is in stocks, remember that short-term volatility could drop it into the red temporarily. Consider moving to cash/bonds as the target date approaches.
  • Watch the sparkline: If your velocity is declining (downward sparkline), investigate why—are you spending more? Contributing less? Adjust before it becomes a problem.
